Cende is not just another band sprouted from a bedroom, a basement, or a garage in Brooklyn; they were forged in an apartment – a DIY space known as David Blaine’s The Steakhouse. The Bushwick venue has been home to members of Porches and LVL UP. And Cende’s pop punk sound hovers somewhere in between those two peers, probably due to the fact that singer/guitarist Cameron Wisch plays drums in Porches and drummer Greg Rutkin is a member of LVL UP. The foursome released their debut LP, “#1 Hit Single,” in May and are currently on tour with (Sandy) Alex G and Japanese Breakfast through July 8.
Onstage, Cende’s upbeat indie anthems become even more energetic under Wisch’s lead, who would probably win the most smiley-faced frontman prize. Joined by Bernard Casserly on bass and Dave Medina on guitar, the short and concise compositions become infectious, aided by Rutkin’s precise drumming. Bonus treat when Michelle Zauner, a.k.a. Japanese Breakfast, filled in for Greta Kline’s (a.k.a. Frankie Cosmos) vocals on “What I Want.”
We spent a bit of time with Cende – walking to a pizza food cart to pick up an order for Medina before their set and playing around with old sparklers that took several minutes to spark after the show. Check out the full gallery below.
