Well, Wednesday was a fucking rush. Fan club members for Mac DeMarco were promised something special, and boy did he deliver.
Early Wednesday, it was announced that Mac, Kirin J. Callinan and Pierce McGarry were playing a show the same day at The Echo. Fan club members had access to a code and could buy tickets an hour early before they went on sale to the public. Tickets sold out in less than 30 seconds (I counted about 15), while most customers were entering in their “I’m not a robot please just let me buy the damn tickets” code. Fans were upset, but found hope in the general sale an hour later.
At 3PM, tickets sold out in less than a minute. Some fans and customers got further this time and could enter their credit card and shipping info before the website crashed and said all tickets had been sold. Fuck.
The show had sold out collectively in a minute in a half, and The Echo was at capacity. Tickets were going for $100-200 on third market sites like StubHub, with tickets selling in minutes and prices fluctuating wildly. People were desperate and it seemed hopeless.
So what about the lucky few that actually got in? Well, they had a pretty magical night, let me tell you.

After a stunning set from Kirin J. Callinan and comedic comfort from Pierce McGarry, Mac took the room and really let loose. After playing a ton of new material (we counted 4 or 5 songs), introducing a new member of the band, and finishing with multiple cover songs including The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Mac crowd surfed, planted a kiss on the sound guy who carried him to the bar, took a shot then climbed up a column 10-15 off the air and dived backwards into the audience. It was quite the fucking sight.
With shows like this selling out left and right, and constant surprises up Mac’s sleeves, it’s no surprise why the frontman continues to dazzle year after year. Even though the band is already set to tour across the world and play some of the biggest and best fests around, the intimate shows like last night really stand out, and you should jump on trying to get a ticket anytime you can.
Make sure to stay tuned for anymore surprise shows and catch him on tour with the just announced duo, The Garden.
